AdsPower SOCKS5 setup guide

How to Configure a SOCKS5 Proxy in AdsPower

Set up a HighProxies SOCKS5 proxy in AdsPower, check the connection and confirm that the browser profile is using the expected proxy IP address.

Setup time: about 5 minutesDifficulty: beginnerProtocol: SOCKS5
Preparation

Before You Start

You need an active proxy service and the connection details assigned to it. Sign in to the HighProxies control panel and copy the proxy host, port and authentication information exactly as displayed.

01

Get your proxy details

  • Proxy IP address or hostname
  • Proxy port
  • Username and password, when using credential authentication
  • Your authorised public IP, when using IP authentication

Important: A proxy changes the network exit IP used by the browser profile. It does not guarantee anonymity, prevent account restrictions or replace proper account-security practices.

Step 1

Add a New Proxy in AdsPower

In AdsPower, open Proxies from the left-hand menu and select Add Proxy. AdsPower will open a form where you can select the protocol and enter the connection details.

Step 2

Enter the SOCKS5 Proxy Settings

Select SOCKS5 as the proxy type. Enter the proxy information from your HighProxies control panel without adding http://, https:// or socks5:// before the host.

AdsPower field Value to enter
Proxy Type SOCKS5
Host / IP YOUR_PROXY_IP
Port YOUR_PROXY_PORT
Proxy Username YOUR_USERNAME, or leave empty when using IP authentication
Proxy Password YOUR_PASSWORD, or leave empty when using IP authentication
Remark Use a clear label such as HighProxies-US-SOCKS5

Use one authentication method: enter the assigned username and password, or authorise your current public IP in the control panel. Do not mix incomplete credentials with IP authentication.

Step 3

Check and Save the Proxy

Select Check Proxy in AdsPower. A successful check should return an external IP address and location. Confirm that the result matches the proxy location you ordered, then save the proxy.

Successful result: AdsPower reports that the proxy is reachable and displays the proxy IP rather than your normal internet connection IP.

For an independent command-line test, replace the placeholders below with your own details:

curl --proxy 'socks5h://YOUR_USERNAME:YOUR_PASSWORD@YOUR_PROXY_IP:YOUR_PROXY_PORT' https://api.ipify.org

The socks5h form tells cURL to resolve the destination hostname through the proxy. See SOCKS5 vs SOCKS5h for the DNS-handling difference.

Step 4

Assign the Proxy and Verify the Browser Profile

  1. Create a new AdsPower browser profile or edit an existing profile.
  2. Select the saved SOCKS5 proxy from the profile's proxy settings.
  3. Save the profile and launch it.
  4. Open an IP-checking website inside that profile.
  5. Confirm that the displayed IP and country match the assigned proxy.

Use the same browser profile for repeat testing. Opening an IP-checking website in your regular browser tests your normal connection, not the proxy assigned to AdsPower.

Troubleshooting

What to Check When the SOCKS5 Proxy Fails

Connection or timeout error

  • Confirm that SOCKS5 is selected
  • Recheck the host and port
  • Remove any protocol prefix from the host field
  • Check local firewall or security software
  • Test from another network when possible

Authentication error

  • Copy the username and password again
  • Check for accidental spaces
  • Verify that the service is active
  • When using IP authentication, authorise your current public IP
  • Do not enter old credentials from a replaced service

Still not working? Send support the proxy IP and port, your current public IP, a screenshot of the AdsPower proxy settings and the complete error message. Never send an unmasked password in a public ticket or screenshot.

FAQ

AdsPower SOCKS5 Proxy Questions

Does SOCKS5 encrypt browser traffic?

No. SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol and does not add encryption by itself. HTTPS websites still use their normal HTTPS encryption between the browser and the destination website.

Should I enter the IP and port in the same field?

Use the fields shown by your AdsPower version. When separate host and port fields are available, enter the IP in the host field and the numeric port in the port field.

Can I use an HTTP or HTTPS proxy instead?

Yes, when your proxy service supports that protocol. Select the matching HTTP or HTTPS option in AdsPower and use the connection details assigned to that service.

Why does AdsPower show my normal IP?

The profile may not have the saved proxy assigned, the proxy check may have failed or the IP test may have been opened outside the AdsPower profile. Recheck the profile proxy selection and launch the profile again.
